“I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested not only in the personality and achievements of Lawrence but also the historical context. Despite the slightly complicated structure of shuttling between the 4 lead characters, it very skillfully unpacks the extremely complex machinations between individuals, tribal groups and nations and gives a clear and gripping narrative. Understanding Lawrence in context rather than simply as a lone swashbuckling hero ended up giving me even more respect for his huge achievements. Yes, the end result could be labelled ‘failure’, but even apart from his PR value he contributed so much to the Arab cause. It could have been so much worse. As the reviewer says, the book also gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes expose of the roots of the Zionist cause out of the entanglement of Jewish, Arab and Ottoman interests underlying the Great Games of the Western Powers.”
